Kids’ back teeth have deep grooves where toothbrush bristles can’t quite reach — and that is exactly where most childhood cavities start. Dental sealants are a simple, painless way to shield those teeth.
What Are Dental Sealants?
A sealant is a thin, tooth-colored coating we paint onto the chewing surfaces of molars. It flows into the tiny pits and grooves and hardens into a smooth shield, keeping out food particles and bacteria. Think of it as a raincoat for teeth — it does not replace brushing, but it covers the spots brushing misses. Sealants have been used safely for decades and are one of the most cost-effective cavity preventers in dentistry.
The Best Ages for Sealants
Timing matters. We usually recommend sealants when the first permanent molars arrive around age 6, and again for the second molars around age 12 — right when those teeth are most vulnerable. Teens whose grooves are deep, or who have already had a cavity or two, are great candidates as well. During your child’s checkup, we will take a look and tell you honestly whether sealants make sense.
A Quick, Painless Visit
Kids are often surprised by how easy it is. We clean and dry the tooth, paint on the sealant, and harden it with a special light — a few minutes per tooth, no drilling, no shots, no discomfort. Your child can eat normally right after. One short visit buys years of extra cavity protection, and it is far simpler (and easier on the wallet) than filling a cavity later.
