What Counts as a Dental Emergency
If you're unsure whether your situation is urgent, err on the side of calling us. We'd rather hear from you than have a small problem turn into a big one.
- Severe toothache that won't ease with over-the-counter pain relief
- A knocked-out (avulsed) tooth
- A broken, cracked, or badly chipped tooth
- A lost filling or crown
- Swelling in the gums, jaw, or face
- Bleeding in the mouth that won't stop
- Injury to the lips, tongue, or jaw from a fall or accident
What to Do Until We See You
These steps protect your tooth and ease your pain on the way to our office. Then let us take it from there.
Knocked-out tooth
- Pick the tooth up by the crown (the chewing surface) — never touch the root
- Rinse it gently with water; don't scrub it or remove attached tissue
- If you can, place it back in the socket and hold it there
- If not, keep it in a cup of milk or tucked inside your cheek
- Get to us as fast as possible — timing matters most here
Severe toothache
- Rinse your mouth with warm water to clear debris
- Gently floss around the tooth — food caught between teeth is a common cause
- Hold a cold compress against your cheek to ease swelling
- Don't place aspirin directly on the tooth or gums — it can burn the tissue
Broken or cracked tooth
- Rinse your mouth with warm water
- Save any broken pieces and bring them with you
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling
- Cover any sharp edge with a bit of dental wax or sugarless gum until your visit
Lost crown or filling
- Save the crown — we may be able to re-cement it
- For a lost filling, a dab of temporary dental cement (from any drugstore) or toothpaste can protect the spot short-term
- Avoid chewing on that side until we see you
